Language Technologies, Inc. (LTI) was incorporated in the state of Delaware in 2001 and is based in Tucson, Arizona. Our patented software, ReadSmart®, is ready-for-market. ReadSmart adds value to any form of text by improving its legibility (the speed and ease of reading), readability (the attractiveness and meaningfulness of text), and economy (efficient use of available space). ReadSmart technology is a marriage of cutting-edge software and proven scientific research which can be applied to any text without modifying the wording, spelling, or punctuation and can be used with any font or typeface.
LTI Team
President and Chief Executive Officer: Lee Berendt brings more than 30 years of senior management experience, including the position of President of Commodity Exchange, Inc. (Comex). He is responsible for company performance and a member of the Board of Directors.
Chief Technical Officer and Chairman of the Board: Thomas G. Bever, PhD has been a central figure in the development of the fields of cognitive science and psycholinguistics for over 40 years. As Technical Director, Dr. Bever is responsible for LTI’s research and development.
Director of Operations: John Maher has over 20 years of experience in software development, project management, and public accounting. John comes to LTI from UCLA, where he was coordinator for Bruin OnLine with over 300,000 faculty, staff, and student accounts.
Director of Development and Production: Christopher D. Nicholas, PhD is a neuroscientist with over 15 years of laboratory management and research experience on the visual perception of letters and words and empirical aesthetics.
Software Engineer: Roeland Hancock has degrees in mathematics and psychology, research experience in psycholinguistics, and software development expertise in the areas of natural language processing and software quality management.
Production Specialist: Kristen Ashley is an artist and designer with a background in visual communications from the Art Center Design College. She is responsible for ReadSmart formatting, LTI’s website design, and other design projects.

Co-Founder: John Robbart is an inventor of ReadSmart and co-founder of LTI. Prior to LTI, Mr. Robbart was at Citibank where he bought, sold and restructured companies in the bank’s portfolio and subsequently ran an investment advisory group in Europe raising over $30mm for clients.
Director: Kirt Gardner has served as President of NovaNet Learning, Inc., and President of NCS Learn. Mr. Gardner currently serves as a Director and Consultant to several curriculum and education companies.
Director: William D. Peterson is a principal of Baker, Peterson, Baker, & Associates, Inc. Mr. Peterson specializes in valuation and consultation services related to commercial and income-producing properties.
