ReadSmart software applies algorithms to text to optimize reading comprehension and retention. This patented process subtly changes spacing and size of words on a page based on linguistic, psychological, and visual principles. The efficacy of ReadSmart has been tested and proven in a variety of printed media, including textbooks, newspapers, and direct-mail solicitations. Text transformed using ReadSmart technology is understood better, read faster, and rated as more enjoyable than regular typeset text. Testing has been in a variety of reading populations from grade school students to college students, including English language learners.

HOW READSMART WORKS

The type revolution was the invention of uniform, moveable type. The ReadSmart revolution is the invention of intelligently non-uniform type. With the digitalization of type, the internet, and wireless networks, moveable type is even more mobile than ever; however, the uniformity that was crucial during the past six centuries is no longer necessary in the digital age.

ReadSmart bends the rules of typographic practice by making small, customized adjustments to every character in a document to improve the understanding and appearance of the text. Although these changes to the composition of the text are small, they facilitate eye-movements and comprehension.

READSMART LOOKS BETTER AND IS UNDERSTOOD BETTER

ReadSmart is a new, intelligent approach to the old technology of typesetting. Traditional typesetting software emphasizes aesthetics factors (readability), such as the evenness of text density from line to line, with little attention to factors that improve the understanding of text (legibility). Our philosophy is that the best typesetting is smart typesetting.

ReadSmart technology is designed to compose text for print or display with a beneficial balance of the factors that influence readability and legibility. Our technology improves legibility for the reader without distracting the reader or disrupting conventional appearance. The result is subtle: we use non-distracting microtypographic alterations to the spacing and type to adjust the characters in a document.

ReadSmart formatting is implemented differentially so that macrotypographic factors that affect readability are simultaneously improved as microtypographic alterations improve legibility.

READSMART DIGITAL BOOKS

Generic e-books preserve content and facilitate distribution, but remove the unique typographical qualities of the book, which book designers carefully craft through choice of typeface and design when making print books. Our technology preserves the design and typography of print books resulting in high-quality, visually distinctive digital books.

ReadSmart algorithms analyze text to give document-specific results: the arrangement of text for a document is optimized according to the author’s content while preserving the designer’s layout. ReadSmart technology also converts digital typesetting files used for print books to digital books. Our process customizes the book content for the reading device by making intelligent, economical use of the display. Critically, once a digital book has been created using ReadSmart technology, it has the look and feel of a book, not a generic electronic document.
